This week is about another nice new feature for the enrollment of Android Enterprise corporate-owned devices, and that feature is the ability to use custom device naming templates. Custom device naming templates enable IT administrators to adjust the name of Android Enterprise corporate-owned devices during the enrollment. That provides IT administrators with the ability to adhere naming conventions to their devices and with that organize the devices neatly within the console. That can also make it a whole lot easier to locate devices. This post will focus on the required configurations for using custom device naming templates for Android Enterprise corporate-owned devices.
Note: Keep in mind that custom device naming templates will adjust the management name of the device.
Introducing custom device naming templates for Android devices
The default device naming for Android Enterprise corporate-owned devices is based on the username, device type, and date and time of the enrollment (e.g. pvanderwoude_AndroidEnterprise_5/5/2025_12:12 PM). When that default device naming is not working for the organization, it’s now possible to work with custom device naming templates. Working with custom device naming templates is actually pretty straightforward. The only thing that is really important before getting started, are the available variables that can be used for the device naming. The table below provides an overview of the currently available variables.
Variable | Description |
---|---|
{{SERIAL}} | The string will be replaced for the serial number of the device. |
{{SERIALNUMBERLAST4DIGITS}} | The string will be replaced for the last 4 digits of the serial number of the device. |
{{DEVICETYPE}} | The string will be replaced for the type of the device. |
{{ENROLLEDDATETIME}} | The string will be replaced for the date and time of enrollment of the device. |
{{UPNPREFIX}} | The string will be replaced for user account name of the user enrolling the device. |
{{USERNAME}} | The string will be replaced for name of the user enrolling the device. |
{{RAND:x}} | The string will be replaced for a random string of numbers (where x is between 1 and 9). |
Note: Multiple variables can be combined within the custom device naming template for Android devices.
Configuring custom device naming templates for Android devices
After being familiar with the available variables that can be used with custom device naming templates, it’s time to actually use it during the enrollment. That can be achieved by creating an enrollment profile for Android Enterprise corporate-owned devices. That could be an enrollment profile for corporate-owned dedicated devices, corporate-owned fully managed user devices, or corporate-owned devices with work profile. The following steps walk through the process of creating an enrollment profile for corporate-owned fully managed user devices, with the focus on the custom device naming template.
- Open the Microsoft Intune admin center navigate to Devices > Android > Enrollment > Corporate-owned fully managed user devices
- On the Corporate-owned, fully managed user devices page, click Create policy
- On the Basics page, as shown below in Figure 1, specify the following information, and click Next
- Name: Provide a unique name to distinguish it from similar profiles
- Description: (Optional) Provide a description to further distinguish it from similar profiles
- Token type: Select the token type that should be used by choosing between default and staging
- Apply device name template: Select Yes to enable the configuration of the custom device naming template
- Device name template: Specify the custom device naming that should be used for naming the device

- On the Device group page, select the earlier created group and click Next
- On the Review + create page, review the configuration and click Create
Note: The steps for the different enrollment profiles for Android Enterprise corporate-owned devices are similar.
Experiencing custom device naming templates for Android devices
After creating an enrollment profile for corporate-owned fully managed user devices, it’s time to experience the actual custom device naming template. That is actually also something that can be easily captured in a screenshot. On the device itself, the Intune app will show a device name conform the custom device naming template. Besides that, within the Microsoft Intune admin center portal the device will also show up with a device name conform the custom device naming template. That is also shown below in Figure 2. A device name that corresponds to the custom device naming template that was used. In this case the device name starts with a custom prefix, followed with the serial number of the device.

What happens if you edit an existing policy will it retroactively change all the enrolled devices currently linked to that profile?
Hi ceesvan,
It will only be used during the enrollment of the device.
